5 Things People Forget To Clean

You’ll be surprised at how quickly germs and bacteria can grow in the places that you forget to clean. Studies show that things like door handles, light switches, and handbags are likely the reason we get sick, as these are areas that people tend to miss when spring cleaning the house. In an effort to help keep your home happy and healthy, here are 5 things people forget to clean around the house.

Kitchen sponge

Do you remember the last time you switched your kitchen sponge for a fresh one? If the answer is no, then your kitchen sponge may be passing around harmful bacteria and foodborne illnesses such as salmonella. Regularly disinfect your sponges with the microwave method, or replace your sponge with a clean new one every week.

Cell phone

Did you know that our mobile phones carry more germs than our toilet seats? That’s not exactly surprising, since our phones follow us wherever we go. According to some studies, as many as 1 in 6 cell phones contain traces of faecal bacteria (ew!), so all the more reason to remember to disinfect your phone on a regular basis!

Bath mat

Your bath mat may be one of the germiest areas in your bathroom. Moist conditions make your bathroom mat a breeding ground for nasty germs, especially since toilet bacteria will likely jump onto the mat during flushing. Make sure you wash your bath mat weekly on a high heat, and place it when it is clean on the radiator to dry so mould doesn’t start to develop.

TV remote

When we handle our TV remotes on a daily basis – often while eating, relaxing, and cooking – it’s no wonder that they become one of the most bacteria-ridden areas of our living room. In hospitals and hotels, the TV remote is known to be one of the germiest features. To avoid the spread of microorganisms, wipe down remote controls with an anti-bacterial wipe or disinfectant to clean it once a week.

How far away from the toilet seat do you keep your toothbrush? If the answer is “not very far”, then you may want to consider getting a new one. When you flush the toilet, bacteria can reach as far as 6 feet away, so make sure you keep your toothbrush well away from the toilet and remember to close the lid when you flush!
